Guy Ritchie will direct the movie musical, which will see Will Smith as the Genie.

The live-action Aladdin was originally expected to begin a six-month shoot in July, however, casting delays appear to have altered the schedule. And now, finally the cast are confirmed. Mena Massoud (The 99, Jack Ryan) will play the titular street thief, with Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) set to play Jasmine. The casting comes after an extensive worldwide search to find actors for those leading roles. The studio also confirmed that Will Smith will play the role of the Genie in the film and that it will not only borrow plot elements from the original animated movie but also its basis, 1,001 Arabian Nights.

Massoud, who was born in Egypt and raised in Canada, is a relative newcomer, though he has appeared in the likes of Jack Ryan and TeenNick series Open Heart.

"So honored & grateful for the opportunity to help bring this magical story to life once again. Let's get to work!" he tweeted following the big announcement.

Scott, a British actress and singer whose mother is from northern India, has also appeared in the film The 33 and the Fox series Terra Nova.

Guy Ritchie was previously announced as director. John August, whose credits include “Big Fish,” wrote the new “Aladdin” script. Dan Lin, who produced Ritchie’s two “Sherlock Holmes” movies for Warner Bros., is also producing “Aladdin” through his Lin Pictures company. Jonathan Eirich is exec producing.

It's not yet known who will portray villainous Jafar, though Peaky Blinders star Tom Hardy is said to be in the running as director Guy Ritchie is said to be a big fan of the 39-year-old hunk.

A source said previously: “Guy is a huge fan of Tom's work and securing him would be a major coup.

“There have been conversations and, although nothing is set in stone and things are subject to change, he's certainly one of Guy's favoured choices.

“It just depends on schedules whether he'll be able to sign up.”
